Take Me To The River, Music Unites and Compton Unified School District Host Event Empowering Inner-City Students Through Music

May 12, 2015, Compton, Calif. – Award-winning feature film Take Me To The River, non-profit organization Music Unites, acclaimed artists Frayser Boy and William Bell, and the Compton Unified School District partnered to host a music-filled event to teach and inspire inner-city students through the power of music on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Martin Luther King Elementary and the Compton High School Auditorium in Compton, California.

Revolving around director Martin Shore’s latest film, Take Me To The River, which celebrates the musical influence of Memphis in the face of pervasive discrimination and segregation, the event kicked off at the Martin Luther King Elementary School, where sixth-grade students participated in a songwriting workshop led by Music Unites’ Kirk Sells, STAX Records legend Martin Shore, William Bell and Academy Award winner Frayser Boy. Students embarked on an exciting “rap battle” and presented their creations to their classmates, teachers and music mentors. The songwriting session also included a Q&A on the guests’ experiences in the music industry.

The event continued at the Compton High School Auditorium with special performances by 21 Martin Luther King Elementary School sixth- grade students, who performed “BaBa Blues,” “Bossa Nova” and “Cage Full O’Blues.” Thanks to the support of the district’s superintendent and board of trustees, the evening also featured a special screening of Take Me To The River for students, parents and teachers, and a Q&A session with Shore, Bell and Frayser Boy.

“Take Me to the River is a must-see experience that transcends and bridges generation gaps. As an educator, I was deeply moved by the juxtaposition of the struggle of STAX recording studio and the struggle experienced by those embroiled in the Civil Rights Movement. I was further stricken by the influence of the musicians/artists from the Memphis area and the history brought about by their experiences. Their imparting of that knowledge to contemporary artists and novices was truly philanthropic. Compton High School students, staff and administration loved this film!,” said Principal of Operations at Compton High School, Doi Johnson.

Music Unites first collaborated with Shore at The Apollo, where the Music Unites Pepsi PS 153 Choir and Youth Choir performed in honor of the film. This Los Angeles community-wide educational initiative is meant to empower youth through music by having students watch the film and participate in the musical experience through special performances and educational panels with renowned talent.

Our Music Unites Pepsi PS 153 Choir had the privilege to perform at the Apollo launch event, and we wanted to continue collaborating and educating students about the film and importance of the power of music in their daily lives. Take Me To The River is an award-winning feature film that celebrates the musical influence of Memphis in the face of pervasive discrimination and segregation. The film brings multiple generations of award-winning Memphis and Mississippi Delta musicians together, following them through the creative process of recording a historic new album, to re-imagine the utopia of racial, gender and generational collaboration of Memphis in its heyday. Shore partnered with Berklee College of Music to develop a curriculum based on his film, and in February 2015 kicked off the Take Me To The River Education Initiative at the world famous Apollo Theater, where the Music Unites Pepsi PS 153 Choir offered the world premiere arrangement of “Wish I Had Answered” by George Russell, Jr. and Renese King.

About Martin Shore Producer/Director Martin Shore began his entertainment career at 14 as a PA for his brother’s award-winning 1977 film Punking Out. Music Unites Pepsi PS 153 Chorus Performs for NYC Department of Education Teachers

On Friday, January 30th, the students of Music Unites Pepsi PS 153 Chorus received the opportunity to perform at a highly prestigious professional development workshop for New York City Department of Education music teachers. Under the direction of Ms. Arielle Hyatt, the students sang a a gospel spiritual from the project “Take Me to the River” with a professional band. Students were then coached in a masterclass setting by faculty from Berklee College of Music faculty, Renese King, on style influence, phrasing, and 12-bar blues progressions acting as accompaniment. PS 153’s student’s shined as radiant soloists teaching other music educators the lead vocal lines and harmonies.

Music Unites & Centennial High School Partners With King Bach

On Saturday January 16th, Music Unites and Centennial High School partnered with Vine & IG celebrity, King Bach, as he hosted a charity basketball tournament to raise money for the RuJohn Foundation (rujohnfoundation.com). The organization focuses on providing school supplies and arts + sports education opportunities for children in Jamaica. The event was immensely popular, with close to 200 attendees, and featured a performance from the school’s marching band, which includes many Music Unites students.

Music Unites Friends & Family Holiday Benefit

On Sunday, December 14th, Music Unites celebrated their Friends and Family Holiday Benefit celebrating Terry O’Neill’s Rock ’N’ Roll Album. The event was held at the Mouche Gallery in Beverly Hills, California.

Guests were treated to performances by Sam Harris of X Amassadors, Tony Beliveau of Crash Kings, Scavenger Hunt, Julia Price, DJ Aaron Byrd from KCRW, Lunar Social, Music Unites Ambassador: DJ Skee, and Music Unites’ Student Ambassador: Anson Li. Music Unites’ Founder, Michelle Edgar, showcased her very own talent on the piano as well.

Music Unites sends a special thank you to all Host Committee members, PepsiCo, Heineken, Ketel One Vodka, LA Canvas and Mouche Gallery for their support.

On December 7th, the Music Unites Pepsi PS 153 Choir performed on the red carpet for the Annie movie premiere. Led by Arielle Hyatt, the choir performed for stars such as Cameron Diaz, Jamie Foxx, Sia, Jay-Z and Beyonce!! Thanks to our team members Arielle, Jillian and Kim for organizing the event!

The Music Unites Pepsi PS 153 Choir visited PepsCoi’s Headquarters in White Plains, NY. During their visit, the kids performed Christmas carols for PepsiCo employees, participated on a workshop learning a holistic view of marketing and took what they learned and pitched marketing strategies to the PepsiCo Marketing Team.
